Company History

Eugene Thein, the son of a Luxembourg immigrant blacksmith, left New Trier, MN at the age of 19, shortly after his father's death, and moved to Clara City, MN.  Eugene parlayed his blacksmith skills to become the area's resident well driller.  He started with constructing shallow, dug wells by horse power in 1893.

Peter J. Thein, Eugene's oldest son, worked with his father from an early age and took over the business in the early 1900's.  He expanded the business and brought five of his sons in with him.  Leonard Thein was active in the business until his death in 1968.  Joseph was killed in a drilling accident in 1947 at the age of 25.

Stanley, Dennis and Peter Thein, the three remaining sons, purchased the business from their dad in 1965.  They have since expanded the business greatly in terms of location and equipment.  Considered pioneers in the industry, Stanley, Dennis and Peter were the first in their areas to ad rotary well drilling to their stable of services (as compared to the standard cable tool drilling).  They grew their business to include locations in Rochester, Spicer and Monticello - in addition to the original Clara City location.

Today, all three are still active in the company.  Dennis operates the Rochester branch with his sons Mark and Craig;  Stanley operates the Clara City branch with his son David;  Pete operates the Spicer branch with Stanley's son Robert and Stanley's son Mike operates the Monticello location.

Thein Well Co. has always been active in industry associations.  By keeping up with the latest in techniques, equipment and environmental impacts, Thein Well Co. has kept "ahead of the curve" in constructing wells in the most efficient manner possible.  Thanks to a great many loyal and highly qualified long term employees, Thein Well Co. continues to set the standard in the water well industry.
